About Dr Mark Maritz
Dr Mark Maritz is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon in knee, foot and ankle surgery. He has gained fellowship experience both locally and internationally, including at the prestigious Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He has served as Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at a busy Durban hospital and led the Foot and Ankle Unit at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Orthopaedics.
He has extensive expertise in managing foot and ankle pathology through newer minimally invasive and keyhole techniques. These techniques allow for easier recovery and an earlier return to normal activity.
Managing sporting injuries with keyhole and arthroscopic techniques has gained traction globally and remains a strong focus of his practice. Minimal exposure techniques for athletes help to optimise outcomes in high-demand individuals.
Dr Maritz is the President-elect of the South African Foot and Ankle Society. He also serves on the executive committee of the South African Orthopaedic Association and is a committee member of the ISAKOS leg, foot and ankle portfolio.
Professional Memberships & Qualifications
He currently serves on the executive committee of the South African Foot and Ankle Society, as well as the executive committee of the South African Orthopaedic Association. He has recently been appointed to the internationally acclaimed ISAKOS ankle committee, furthering education in orthopaedic sports surgery.

Training and consulting
Dr Maritz continues to teach and train surgeons both locally and internationally in minimally invasive surgery, while also presenting at courses and congresses in South Africa and abroad. These techniques have steep learning curves, making structured training essential for surgeons entering this field.
He also provides master instructor consultancy on an international platform, training surgeons in arthroscopic and minimally invasive foot and ankle procedures.
